Smear 16” x 20” Original Art – RAD1visuals

SMEAR is the second canvas from the R1 Basement Studio, following the Swipe of Gray Matter canvas.
This canvas started on April 1st, 2024, but the visually garish canvas is not so simple once the process has begun.

This is why I need multiple blank canvases hanging at all times! The above image shows the progression over a few days. I had already started the Swipe of Gray Matter canvas earlier in the day, even while finishing the build on the makeshift basement studio! And I started a third “idea” right after putting the “4” and paint drips on this canvas. But with this “SMEAR” canvas, there are five or six finished canvases underneath this one work of art. OK, maybe three canvases (#2, #4, #6), but the “process” is always about knowing when it’s finished. I was so eager to return to painting, and I just kept going, got lost in it, and had to find my way out with something I was happy with after “seeing” those other two, knowing each time I should have stopped and started new canvases! But yeah, it’s a process!
Why the number “4?” I don’t know! The numeral caught my eye while at the store buying paint. There it hung, a whole pack of numbers and letter stencils. The four was the number displayed on the packaging. I wonder if the stencil company did a case study research project on what are the best-selling numbers displayed in the package.

I am pretty particular about how the art is packed! Canvas work will be wrapped in glassine and well-padded!
