In this film, Will Feagins, Jr. partnered with historian, archivist, and educator Antar Fierce to explore the origins of Atlanta’s graffiti culture and its influence on the city’s current street art movement. This project, made possible by the South Fulton Institute, features interviews with Atlanta writers Sparky Z, Save, Hense, and Vayne. The first public showing premiered February 22, 2024, at the Plaza Theater in Atlanta, GA, as part of the South Fulton Institute’s 6th Annual “Filmer” program.
ABOUT William Feagins, Jr. / wfjrFILMS
Award-winning filmmaker and documentarian William Feagins, Jr. was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He first discovered his love for film while studying at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where he was able to create music videos for local Hip Hop artists as his school projects. In 2006, William filmed & directed his first documentary, “The Art of Life,” for independent hip-hop artist, ChaRon Don. Soon after, William relocated to Atlanta, where its rich arts and music scene made it a perfect place for him to create and grow as an artist.
Feagin’s cinematography and direction often reflect the realness of the subject matter. His passion for film and Hip Hop has inspired his love for cinema. Still, his extensive portfolio has matured into documentaries that beautifully chronicle the complexities of the human experience through the lens of Black and Brown people. ABOUT Antar K. Fierce
Antar K. Fierce is a Graffiti Historian and Teaching Artist in Atlanta, Georgia. Antar became interested in the graffiti art form in 1983 and began documenting, collecting, and archiving it. In 2008, he co-founded the Steel Wheels show, an all railroad-inspired art exhibition. As chief curator and organizer Antar quickly realized the significance of reaching beyond the art itself and delving into the stories that make up this incredible modern art movement, specifically the Atlanta version. In 2023, Fierce co-produced a short film, “City Of Kings: A Public Art Origin Story.” Following its release, Antar had the opportunity to share the film in various spaces and speak at colleges and universities on the subject of Atlanta Graffiti. It is with considerable intention that Antar is working to solidify Style Writing’s place in the art history canon.
The current KINGS ARRIVE exhibition is the most recent curatorial project led by Fierce, where he brings Atlanta’s oldest Hip Hop and graffiti crew to the forefront, The United Kings. It is the classic tale of 5 inner-city kids from Atlanta who learned from traditional Hip Hop culture how to unify, organize, and collaborate.
